Podcast: My Seven Favourites

My Podcast Listening Habits

My number one piece of advice for anyone wanting to create their own podcast is to start listening to how other people are doing it. Go through the whole process of subscribing and listening and make a list of the things you admire and the things you don’t. Plan your show accordingly.

Here’s my current favourite podcasts with a comment as to why I like each one.

99% Invisible by Roman Mars

This podcast is simply beautiful. They’re short 15-25 minute stories on a range of design topics. It’s superb storytelling with a wonderful weave of sounds – interview snippets, voiceovers, background sounds… If you want to know what a podcast could be like, then this is it. I’d love my podcast to be like this one day.

On Being with Krista Tippett

This podcast is beautiful in a different way. Again, high production values and it’s calming and soothing and inspiring. The topic is: What does it means to be human? It’s an invitation to reflect on your life. I also love the split episodes. One is offered as the edited version, the other un-edited warts and all view. It’s a voyeur’s insight into the real show.

Six Pixels of Separation with Mitch Joel

This is my brain food podcast. This one is about cutting edge marketing and communication thinking and practice. It’s a mix of Mitch interviewing authors and experts, and having some toe-to-toe conversations with Joseph Jaffe. Love the depth and breadth of the conversation here. Most episodes challenge my thinking in some way.

The Suitcase Entrepreneur with Natalie Sisson

Just started listening to this one. What I love about this show is the positioning: the suitcase entrepreneur is such an aspirational message for me. It’s inspiring in topic and the host is so friendly and easy to listen to. Love to listen for ideas for my podcast show.

Social Media Marketing with Michael Stelzner

This is my go-to podcast for practical social media marketing. This show is typically interviews with leading practitioners on specific topics. Usually, at the end of each episode I have a to-do list of things to add to my own podcast, blog or social media efforts.

Smart Passive Income with Pat Flynn

This is another podcast I listen to for ideas that I can implement into my business. I love Pat’s endless enthusiasm and his transparency around his business model. It’s inspiring to hear what he’s building and how he goes about it. I particularly loved his episode: Six Things Architecture Taught Me About Starting An Online Business. I’m going to copy this one for my podcast: Six Things Architecture Taught Me…

Zencast with Gil Fronsdal

This was the first podcast I ever listened to some years ago. By now, I’ve probably listened to over half of the 400+ episodes. As the title suggests it’s about Zen Buddhism. Like On Being, listening to this podcast leaves me calmer and reflecting on my life.
